Speaking at the closing 2016 European Council summit, Latvian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has declared that members have voted for an extension on economic sanctions imposed on Russia, “Sanctions have been already agreed. All EU member states understand that they are inevitable,” Grybauskaite told reporters.
On December 13 Angela Merkel and Francois Holland said they would back extending sanctions on Russia. The extension on the sanctions were discussed on the next day during the EU summit.
NB. EU and USA levied economic sanctions against Russia in 2014 over the military conflict with Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea.
The motion to extend was unanimously carried on December 15.
